common questions
how does compound interest work?
each year's growth is added to the balance, so the next year's growth is calculated on a bigger number. early years look slow; later years are where most of the growth shows up.
what return rate should I use?
7% is a reasonable long-run assumption for a stock index fund. a savings account is closer to 4% in 2026, and bonds sit in between. the calculator starts at 7%; change it in the yearly return field.
is it better to start early with less or later with more?
usually early with less. ten extra years of growth often beats a larger monthly amount started later. try it: halve the contribution and double the years.
